Shevchenko Says NBU “Has No Misunderstandings” With IMF Experts
Ukraine needs to solve a number of problems in the energy sector, as well as the fight against corruption, says the head of the NBU.
In order to reach agreements with the IMF, Ukraine must resolve some problematic issues in the fiscal, energy and anti-corruption spheres. This was stated by the director of the National Bank, Kirill Shevchenko, in a meeting with the ambassadors of the G7 countries. This was reported by the regulator’s press service on Tuesday, February 23.
During the mission, representatives of Ukraine, together with the IMF, identified other concrete steps, “which will signal our dedication to continued cooperation.”
“Regarding the part of the program within the responsibility of the NBU, we have no misunderstandings with the Fund’s experts,” Shevchenko added.
At the meeting, the parties discussed the prospects of continuing cooperation with the IMF, creating a specialized financial court, reducing the proportion of delinquent loans, privatizing state banks and joining Oschadbank to the Individual Deposit Guarantee Fund.
In turn, Shevchenko stressed that the NBU represents the continuation of the negotiations between the EBRD and Oschadbank. In order for a foreign investor to enter Oschadbank’s capital, the bank must join the Private Deposit Guarantee Fund. For this, a corresponding bill has been prepared. This, as well as the restructuring of the debt of the Guarantee Fund with the Ministry of Finance, will increase the guaranteed amount of compensation to depositors.
It was previously reported that the IMF virtual mission ended without result. Loans were frozen due to slow reforms. Subsequently, the PO announced the continuation of negotiations with the IMF in three areas at the same time.
