More than 15 companies have voluntarily withdrawn from the Nord Stream 2 project to avoid US punishment.
The US government has recently included the KVT-RUS company and its Russian ship Fortuna on the sanctions list. According to the representative of the US State Department, Ned Price, this is indicated in the report provided at the request of Congress, writes “Ukrinform.”
“On Friday, the State Department presented a report to Congress on the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline project as required by the European Energy Security Protection Act (PEESA) as amended,” Price said. He pointed out that the document defines the Russian company KVT-RUS as one that knowingly sells, leases or provides the Fortuna barge for the construction of the gas pipeline.
The report includes a list of organizations “that have taken good faith steps to cease activities related to the Nord Stream 2 project within an appropriate period. The companies have freed themselves from US sanctions.” This list includes more than 15 organizations and shows that our legislative objectives actions have a remarkable effect, “added Price.
He also noted that the government maintains constant consultations on energy security issues with European allies and partners. However, he did not specify the details, including whether Ukraine participates in the negotiations, as the main transit country for gas from Russia to Europe. “When it comes to our allies and partners, it is fair to say that they will not be surprised by our approaches or our broad strategy on this matter, both at Nord Stream 2 and energy security abroad,” concluded Price.
Recall that Republican senators in the United States Congress criticized the Joe Biden administration’s position on the Nord Stream 2 pipeline. The criticism was sparked by a State Department report to Congress, which lists a number of companies against the that penalties may be imposed for participating in the construction of the gas pipeline.
