A new airport will be built in Donbass and its design will begin in 2021. This was stated by the President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelenskyy, in an interview with journalists during the Ukraine 30 forum. Infrastructure on February 22, reports the GORDON correspondent.

According to Zelensky, a new airport is planned in Donbass for civil aviation.

“Now they will find a point between the Lugansk and Donetsk regions, and this year we will begin to design a serious new airport for these two regions,” the president said. “We could open and restore the Mariupol airport. But today the military says it is not safe for us.”

In 2014, Russia occupied Crimea and launched an armed aggression in eastern Ukraine. There is fighting between the Armed Forces of Ukraine, on the one hand, and the Russian army and the Russian-backed militants who control parts of the Donetsk and Lugansk regions, on the other. The Russian Federation does not officially recognize its invasion of Ukraine, despite the facts and evidence presented by Ukraine.

The Ukrainian army left Lugansk airport in September 2014 after the invasion of the city by regular units of the Russian army. After withdrawing from Lugansk airport, Ukrainian security forces blew up the runway.

The Ukrainian military (they were called “cyborgs”) left the Donetsk International Airport, named after Sergei Prokofiev on January 22, 2015. The defense of the airport lasted 242 days. During the battles, all the buildings were completely destroyed, both the terminals and the control tower.
