The leadership of “Bruges” until the last moment refused to be examined for the coronavirus by the entire team in Kiev.
The team arrived in Kiev on February 17. He did not want to submit to the tests required by the Ukrainian government for fear of fraud. The club had a suspicion that the tests might not be in the team’s favor on the eve of the game with the Dynamo.
The players and the Club Brugge staff passed the mandatory tests in Belgium prior to departure. A second test in the country to which the club is sent is not part of the official UEFA guidelines.
“Bruges” tried to solve the problem with tests through the Belgian embassy, which involved Belgian Prime Minister Alexander de Croes in this. The team was not allowed to leave the hotel while the matter was resolved.
Soon, the Belgian team managed to agree that there was no need for testing. But the Ukrainian official who was supposed to sign the document with this decision was not available for this.
In the end, the club agreed to get tested, but only in a UEFA certified laboratory. The team passed the tests, went to training, and late on the night of February 17, it became known that the player Mats Rits passed a positive test.
Rits was sent to Belgium on a special flight on February 18 when the match began. “Brugge” does not exclude that the player has passed a false positive test. If Rits tests positive again during routine tests, he will be quarantined for two weeks.
Let us remember that before leaving for Kiev, coach Philippe Clement, his headquarters and several players confirmed a positive test for coronavirus.
