Ukraine’s Attorney General Irina Venediktova said that in 2020 the courts issued 687 acquittals, and in 2019 – 920.
Not guilty verdicts are a big problem for the Ukrainian police system. Attorney General Irina Venediktova stated this on February 17 during a meeting of the parliamentary law enforcement commission: informs the correspondent of the “GORDON” edition.
“Not guilty verdicts are an embarrassment to prosecutors. It is an issue that needs to be addressed,” the attorney general said.
According to her, in 2020, the courts issued 687 acquittals, and in 2019, 920.
“An even greater shame is acquittal on exonerating grounds. In 2020, we had 347 acquittals due to lack of corpus delicti or lack of adequate evidence of guilt,” Venediktova said.
He stressed that meetings are held in the Attorney General’s Office and the regional prosecutor’s offices for each acquittal.
Venediktova was named head of the Attorney General March 17, 2020. This is the first woman to hold the post of attorney general in the history of Ukraine.
