Former Georgian President, Chairman of the Executive Reform Committee of Ukraine Mikhail Saakashvil, said Ukraine’s Ambassador to Georgia Igor Dolgov damages Ukraine’s image in Georgia and in the post-Soviet space. Before that, Dolgov said that Saakashvili’s statements do not help relations between the two countries.
Former President of Georgia, former Head of the Odessa Regional State Administration and Chairman of the Executive Committee for Reforms, Mikhail Saakashvili, said that Ukraine’s Ambassador to Georgia, Igor Dolgov, acts against Ukrainian interests and is involved in corruption . He announced it on February 9 on his Facebook page.
“The Ukrainian Ambassador to Georgia, Mr. Dolgov, who was appointed four years ago [пятый президент Украины Петр] Poroshenko, to fight me, survived. [президенте Украины Владимире] Zelensky and continues to damage Ukraine’s image in Georgia and throughout the post-Soviet space, “Saakashvili said.
According to the former Georgian president, Dolgov worked to prevent “the Ukrainian people’s deputies from attending the elections in Georgia in October last year as observers.”
Saakashvili noted that today Dolgov “with angry rhetoric attacked him” for the fact that he is “fighting for the freedom of the Georgian people and this, it turns out, damages relations between Ukraine and Georgia.”
“I will endeavor to ensure that there are no such ambassadors in either Ukraine or Georgia. And I will put an end to this matter,” he said.
According to Interpress, on February 9, Dolgov attended a meeting at the Georgia Foreign Ministry to discuss Saakashvili’s calls to challenge the Georgian authorities.
Dolgov said the calls from the former Georgian president did not help to develop an atmosphere of trust between the two countries and bilateral relations and strategic partnerships.
“Naturally, as a specific person, you have the right to express yourself, but now, when the situation with the parliamentary elections [в Грузии] more or less settled and the focus is on very important issues, calls for disobedience and illegal demonstrations will not help us much ”. – said the diplomat.
As Echo Kavkaza clarified, Dolgov met with the director of the political department of the Georgian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Georgy Zakarashvili.
In February 2017, Poroshenko appointed former Ukrainian Deputy Defense Minister for European Integration Dolgov to the post of Ukraine’s ambassador to Georgia. Previously, he headed Ukraine’s diplomatic missions in Turkey, Germany and Belgium, and was also the head of Ukraine’s mission to NATO.
