Ukraine’s Foreign Minister Dmitry Kuleba said that the resumption of water supply to Russia-annexed Crimea is possible only after its unemployment. Due to the scarcity of water in some regions of the peninsula, a system of supply to houses has been introduced.
Dmitry Kuleba said this in an interview with Radio Liberty. He called the Ukrainian government’s position on the issue of water supply to the peninsula “absolutely harsh.”
Responding to the direct question whether Ukraine’s position on the issue of water supply to Crimea is tough, Kuleba said: “Absolutely! Absolutely difficult. If there is unemployment, there will be water.” The situation with the water supply has become critical due to the fact that the natural reservoirs have become significantly shallow in the last year.
Before the annexation of Crimea, Ukraine provided almost 85% of the peninsula’s freshwater needs through the Northern Crimean Canal running from the Dnieper. However, after the occupation, the supply of water through the canal to the republic stopped completely.
The natural runoff reservoirs in Crimea annexed by Russia have accumulated 2.4 times fewer resources than a year ago. It didn’t help that they started to fill up a bit in early 2021 due to rainfall and snowmelt.
