The organizers of the competition intend to completely change the tournament grid.

According to the information available to the Italian edition of La Gazzetta dello Sport, UEFA plans to hold a meeting next Tuesday between representatives of its 55 associations, in which a new format for the Champions League will be presented starting in 2024.

The basic principle of the updated draw system of the main European club tournament will be the introduction of a tournament grid of the American MLS model, where 36 teams will be united in a single summary table, but will play 10 matches each before the start of the round playoffs.

Contrary to our usual practice, the organizers intend to completely abandon the seats “reserved” for certain clubs, with the exception of the winner of the last Champions League draw. The remaining 35 positions will be assigned to their respective national leagues.

The teams will still be divided into four pots in the draw, but their pairing will be completely redesigned. For example, the source gives as an example a variant when a team from the first basket will get two opponents from the same category of clubs, three opponents from the second basket, three from the third and two from the fourth, respectively.

A final decision on this matter is expected at the UEFA Executive Committee meeting in April 2021.

Let us remind you that in the recent past, the youth teams of Shakhtar and Dynamo recognized their rivals in the 1/32 UEFA League finals, and federation president Alexander Čeferin confirmed his intention to maintain the format of the 2020 European Championship in 12 countries.
