The US Foreign Ministry commented on media reports about its willingness to negotiate sanctions against the pipeline with Germany.

The United States will oversee the completion of the construction and certification of the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline and decide on sanctions in this regard. This was announced on Tuesday February 2 by a representative of the State Department, writes TASS.

“We will oversee the completion and certification activities of the pipeline and, if carried out, we will decide the applicability of the sanctions,” he said.

Earlier today, German media reported that German Chancellor Angela Merkel and US President Joe Biden discussed the SP-2 issue. It is argued that Washington is ready to begin negotiations on waiver of sanctions against the gas pipeline if Berlin comes up with proposals that ease US concerns.

At the same time, the White House was previously informed that Biden considers Nord Stream 2 a “bad deal” for European countries.
