Scientists claim that they have established the cause of death of the Dyatlov group.

A group of tourists led by Igor Dyatlov died in the Northern Urals in the winter of 1959 under mysterious circumstances.

Swiss researchers confirmed the version of an avalanche in Igor Dyatlov’s group tent in 1959. The scientific journal Communications Earth & Environment published an article with the scientists’ conclusions.

The researchers found that the avalanche arose on a relatively gentle hill due to strong winds and the actions of the tourists themselves, who pitched a tent in an unfortunate location.

“If Dyatlov and his group had not cleared a part of the slope of the snow when they pitched a tent, no tragedy would have occurred. This was the main reason, but not the only one, for the avalanche, ”says the publication.

The researchers have built a model of the disappearance of the snow plate. According to their conclusion, the tourists set up a tent near the slope, having previously cut a large snow niche to protect it from the wind. For 9-13 hours, the snow continued to sweep, increasing the weight of the already disturbed and unstable slab and its pressure on the slope. When the slab’s weight reached a critical point, it dragged itself like an avalanche down the slope.

As a result, when masses of snow began to slide down the mountainside noisily at night, tourists jumped out and were swept away by an avalanche. The frost with a force of minus 25 degrees froze the boys and girls.

A group of students from the Ural Polytechnic Institute under the leadership of 23-year-old Igor Dyatlov died under unknown circumstances in a campaign in the North Urals on the night of February 2 in the area of Mount Kholatchakhl. The incident was officially classified as an accident caused by the irresistible force of nature.

According to the official version of the General Prosecutor of the Russian Federation, the tourists died from the cold. In July 2020, the Attorney General’s Office announced that the issue of the reasons for the deaths of tourists in the pass was finally closed.
