The president of the European Council, Charles Michel, telephoned Russian President Vladimir Putin on Friday, January 22, with whom he discussed the arrest of Alexei Navalny. This was reported by the press service of the Council of the EU.
The President of the European Council informed President Putin of the serious concern of the EU and its member states over the latest developments and called for the full and unconditional respect of Alexei Navalny’s rights, “the statement read.
Michel told Putin that the leaders of the 27 EU countries will discuss relations with Moscow at a summit in March.
The importance of international cooperation in the fight against the coronavirus pandemic was also discussed.
In addition, the head of the European Council and the president of the Russian Federation also discussed the need to strengthen global peace and security and “fight for fewer conflicts and more solutions.”
Recall, Navalny was arrested on January 17 at passport control, when the opponent flew from Berlin to Moscow. The following day, he was sentenced to 30 days of arrest, until February 15.
His supporters announced massive actions on January 23. Now representatives of the Navalny fund are detained in different regions.
