WHO says second year of pandemic could be even worse

The incidence of the coronavirus in the world “has once again reached a peak,” they say in the organization and make disappointing forecasts.

The second year of the COVID-19 pandemic could be even worse than the first. About that set Michael Ryan, Director of the WHO Emergency Program, Wednesday 13 January.

“We are entering the second year [пандемии], and can be even more difficult given the propagation dynamics [коронавируса]Ryan said.

According to him, the information received by the WHO during the last two weeks indicates that the incidence “has once again reached a peak.” So, during the past week, around five million new cases of coronavirus infection and more than 85 thousand deaths were detected in the world.

North and South America account for more than half of all cases in the world in seven days, and Europe for more than a third. Increased incidence has also been reported in the Western Pacific, Africa, and Eastern Mediterranean region.

Ryan emphasized that there is a “perfect storm” pandemic in the Northern Hemisphere, a name given to “a combination of factors that have led to increased transmission in many countries.” This situation has developed due to the accumulation of people indoors during the cold season, as well as new strains of coronavirus.

WHO expert Maria van Kerkhove said that after the holiday period “the situation in some countries will get worse before it gets better.”

“However, the good news is that we now have many tools that can help establish control over transmission. [вируса]”, – Kerkhove summed up.

We will recall that previously the WHO announced a record increase in the number of COVID-19 infections in one week. The number of new COVID-19 cases and deaths increased by 20% and 11%, respectively, compared to the previous seven days.
