On Friday, January 8, the women’s sprint took place at the German Oberhof as part of the fifth stage of the World Cup.
The first biathlon race in 2021 ended with the victory of the Norwegian Tiril Eckhoff, who managed not only to cover the distance quickly enough, but also to close all 10 goals.
Sweden’s Hannah Eberg ran a little slower, so even with a perfect shot she lost half a minute to the triumphant sprint. This is exactly the disadvantage on the closest pursuer that Eckhoff will have at the beginning of the pursuit.
For the first time in her career, Austrian Lisa Teresa Hauser raced to the podium. She ran a penalty loop after shooting from a standstill, but still managed to get ahead of France’s Julie Simon’s result and snatch the bronze.
For Ukrainian women, the race was mixed. Best of all, the sprint was a success for Julia Dzhima, who, with a penalty, managed to place in the top ten in personal discipline for the second time this season. Daria Blashko hit all targets, but only ranked 32nd.
Elena Pidgrushnaya, with three penalties in the passive, qualified for the chase from position 53, while Ekaterina Bekh and Anastasia Merkushina did not reach the top 60. The latter ran four penalty laps in the race and finished the race in the unfortunate line 92 of the arrival protocol.
