Scientists from Turkey have developed a device that uses advanced optical technologies to diagnose coronavirus infection in just 10 seconds.
This is stated in a message on the Bilkent University website, on the basis of which the device was created.
“This device can detect the virus that causes COVID-19 infection in a maximum of 10 seconds using a sample of the oral mucosa,” the university said.
The device was called “Diagnovir”. It acts on the optical properties when, in the presence of a virus, the color changes and its detection occurs with high probability.
“In this system, pathogens are detected within 10 seconds by dynamically receiving a fluorescent signal through a pathogen detection chip specifically designed for the biosensor device,” said Bilkent University.
There is enough material for the device from the oral cavity, not the nasopharynx, which also makes it more comfortable to use.
Furthermore, unlike PCR tests, the system does not rely on sample replication, but rather on detecting the presence or absence of a virus using advanced optical methods.
The device has been shown to be 99% efficient in detecting viruses in preclinical studies.
“Diagnovir” is scheduled to launch into mass production. Scientists plan that over time it will be tuned in such a way that it can detect viruses other than COVID-19.
