In the second part of his final interview for 2020, Shakhtar CEO Sergei Palkin also discussed the positives and negatives of the future expansion of the number of participants in the Ukrainian Premier League to 16 teams.

“You know, 14 teams were, or are, a transitional period,” the Director General of Shakhtar began his response to a corresponding question from a journalist. We won’t be able to stay in good shape if we only have 26 games a year.

But since this season is extremely small: a pandemic, they stopped, the players were sick, next year (2021 – ed.) There will be national teams. Therefore, this format is fortunate for us.

Starting next season there will be 16 teams. As a rule, this is the perfect balance for our championship. But the main thing is the quality of the teams that will participate in the UPL. To be honest, I’m not sure we have 16 teams that are really up to the Major League level.

I really don’t think so, but there is an association that reviews all these clubs, sees all the “cuisine” in these clubs. If you say there are 16 clubs, then you know what you are talking about. It’s just that I don’t think we can recruit these 16 clubs. “

At the time of the season, the Shakhtar Donetsk players are on vacation, but already on January 15 the Pitmen will meet in Turkey for two consecutive training camps.
