Estonia announced territorial claims against the Russian Federation

The president of the Estonian parliament recalled the centennial Tartu peace treaty, which Moscow now considers only a historical document.

The President of the Estonian Parliament, Henn Põlluaas, in his New Year’s speech presented territorial claims against Russia. According to him, the Tartu Peace Treaty, concluded in 1920 between the RSFSR and Estonia, is in force, which means that part of the right bank of the Narva River and the Pechora district of the Pskov region belong to the republic, according to the Estonian Parliament website.

Põlluaas recalled that the agreement celebrated its centenary in February. And within the framework of the document, the Russian Federation recognized the independence of Estonia and decided the borders.

“Then the border between Estonia and Russia was agreed, which, according to international law, is still in force today,” said the politician.

However, according to him, today the Kremlin recognizes the Treaty of Tartu only as a historical document and does not consider it valid. The fact is that when Estonia became part of the USSR, the disputed territories passed to the RSFSR. Therefore, the declaration of the speaker of the Estonian parliament can be considered a territorial claim against Russia.
