The Russian Air Force learned that the leadership of the Special Forces Center for Traffic Safety of the Interior Ministry is collecting secret data on the movement of convoys from the President of the Russian Federation and other high-ranking officials through of group chats on WhatsApp. After the publication of the investigation in Moscow, the head of the State Road Safety Inspectorate was replaced. This was announced by the television channel “Rain”.
For three years, the leadership of the Special Forces Center for Road Safety of the Russian Interior Ministry has been collecting secret data on the routes of the country’s top officials through WhatsApp chats. Two former employees and one current employee of the Center reported this to the BBC’s Russian Service.
Journalists noted that the special battalion is accompanied by the president of Russia, the prime minister, the president of the Federation Council, the FSB and leaders of foreign states.
According to the Air Force, in late 2016, Police Colonel Anatoly Makarenkov became the commander of the special battalion. He ordered the commanders of the eight platoons of the special battalion to collect secret data on the movements of the first people.
Former employee of the special battalion Vasily Vetitnev told reporters that the transmission of information about the movements of senior officials “on the foreign messenger WhatsApp endangers the leadership of the state.”
The Air Force investigation was published on December 31, and on January 2, Interfax reported that Moscow had replaced the head of the State Highway Safety Inspectorate. Since 2019, this position has been held by Yuri Droganov.
According to information from TASS, which was reported by a police source, Droganov was removed from office by decree of the President of the Russian Federation.
The Dozhd TV channel noted in its post that the head of the Moscow State Traffic Safety Inspectorate was fired after the Air Force investigation appeared.
In August 2020, Kommersant, citing his sources, reported that the attackers had put up for sale the personal data of approximately 1 million drivers in Moscow and the Moscow region. The base was estimated at $ 1.5 thousand.
