Britain and Spain tentatively agree on Gibraltar

Agreement will help avoid “hard Brexit” – Arancia González Laia

The countries tentatively agreed on the status of Gibraltar after the UK left the European Union.

Spain and the United Kingdom managed to agree on a border crossing in the Gibraltar area and avoid a “hard Brexit” in this British territory, said Spanish Foreign Minister Arancia González Laia at a press conference on Thursday, December 31.

“We have reached a preliminary agreement with the United Kingdom, which will be the basis for a future agreement between the European Union and the United Kingdom on Gibraltar,” said the head of the Spanish Foreign Office.

The president of the Spanish government, Pedro Sánchez, wrote on his Twitter page that the countries are embarking on a “new stage” and that the agreement “will remove obstacles and move towards shared prosperity.”

Therefore, under the agreement, Gibraltar will be subject to part of the treaties in force in the EU.

Gibraltar is a British overseas territory on the Iberian Peninsula, disputed by Madrid.

With the departure of Great Britain from the EU, residents of this territory may now lose access to the European market, and possibly even the possibility of free movement within the territory of the European Union.

We will recall, Britain and the EU signed an agreement on the deal. Until complete ratification, the temporary use of the trade agreement will be in effect.

We add that the British Parliament approved the agreement with the European Union. The document has already been approved by the House of Commons, then it will be adopted by the House of Lords and signed by the Queen.
