On December 28, the Cabinet of Ministers established a one-time electricity tariff for the population from the new year to March 31, 2021: 1.68 UAH / kWh. The Ministry of Energy explained: the decree was adopted to avoid a rapid increase in rates for the population since January.

At a meeting on December 28, the government of Ukraine adopted a resolution abolishing the preferential rate of 90 kopecks / kWh for the first 100 kWh for residential consumers and extending the term of the provision on special obligations of market participants of electrical energy (PSO).

As explained by the press service of the Ministry of Energy, this decree was adopted in order to avoid a rapid increase in the rate for the population as of January 2021.

“The JI mechanism expires on January 1, 2021, and if the proposed changes are not accepted, the price of electricity for residential consumers must be formed on market conditions, which would lead to a sharp increase of more than 2.5 times in the electricity tariff for the population (up to about 3.30 UAH / kW-time) “, – says the statement.

According to the decree of the Cabinet of Ministers, from the New Year to March 31, the population will pay for all electricity consumed at a single rate – 1.68 UAH / kWh.

The ministry said that this decree established a single fixed price for electricity for domestic consumers.

“In fact, the rate for the population until March 31, 2021 has remained at the current level (excluding the preferential price for the first 100 kW-time in month). At the same time, the two- and three-zone electrical energy measurement coefficients have been preserved and not changed. Therefore, if, for example, a two-zone electrical energy measurement is established, its price at night will be 50% lower ”, explained the department.

The last time electricity prices for the population were revised in March 2017, the ExPro portal wrote. They are 0.9 UAH / kWh for the first 100 kWh and 1.68 UAH / kWh for the rest of the monthly consumption.

According to the Ministry of Energy, the rate for the population in December 2020 does not cover the cost of delivering electricity from power plants to final consumers. Annual subsidies due to low electricity tariffs for the population reached 65-70 billion UAH. On November 26, the then head of the Ministry of Energy, Yuri Boyko, announced a forced review of the approaches to the formation of rates for the population in the near future.

The idea of the Ukrainian government to bring domestic electricity rates closer to the market level was supported by the Secretariat of the Energy Community and the European Commission.
