A large batch of archaeological artifacts from Ukraine was detained on the border with Serbia. It included more than two thousand items, including pieces of weapons, jewelry, and figurines.
This was reported on the Balkan Observer Facebook.
On the night of December 29, at the Serbian border crossing of Crnja, Serbian customs officials, together with the police, discovered and stopped an attempted smuggling of a rich archaeological collection of 2,113 antiquities from different periods.
The unusual collection was discovered when a truck with Romanian numbers, driven by a 46-year-old Serbian citizen, entered the country. A truck transporting parquet floors from Ukraine to Serbia lined up for entry control overnight. The driver, when asked by customs officials about the cargo, replied that he was only carrying two packages of sweets, in addition to the merchandise that was specified in the customs documentation.
During a detailed inspection of the vehicle, it was revealed that the cab of the truck and the side toolbox were filled with antiques from different periods – the Bronze Age, the Byzantine period, the Middle Ages, as well as the ancient Slavs and Celts.
In total, customs officials counted 2,113 items, including pendants, rings, various tools and weapons, bracelets, brooches, hairpins, spearheads and arrows, axes and even batons, spoons, needles, cutters, keys, spurs, buckles belt, buttons and coins …
Given the size and variety of the collection, it is impossible to determine its value without the judgment of an expert. All articles will be sent for review. However, it is obvious that they are of great historical and archaeological value.
After discovering the collection, the driver told customs officials that the collection was not his, but agreed to transport it from Ukraine to Serbia for a small fee. He was warned that they would contact him after arriving in the country.
