The Cabinet of Ministers canceled the preferential rate of 90 kopecks / kWh for the first 100 kWh for residential consumers as of January 1, 2021.

The government made the corresponding decision in a meeting on December 28, reports RBC-Ukraine.

“We will decide to extend the PSO until March 31, 2021 and set a fixed price for domestic consumers at 1.68 UAH / kWh,” Energy Minister Yuriy Vitrenko at a government meeting.

Starting from January 1, 2021, household consumers will pay for the total amount of electricity consumed at a single rate – 1.68 UAH / kWh. This rate will be valid until March 31, 2021.

In general, the project to act Minister Yuriy Vitrenko maintains low electricity rates for the population. Even after the increase, they will be about 2 times lower than the real market prices for electricity.

As a reminder, the electricity rates for the population have not been revised since March 2017. They are 90 kopecks / kWh for the first 100 kWh and 1.68 UAH / kWh for the rest of the monthly consumption. This is more than four times lower than the average rate in Europe.

According to the Ministry of Energy, the tariff for the population in December 2020 does not even cover the cost of delivering electricity from power plants to final consumers.

Annual subsidies for the reduction of electricity tariffs for the population reached 65-70 billion UAH.

The elimination of cross-subsidies in the electricity market was supported by the Secretariat of the Energy Community and the European Commission. Experts noted that increased financial support of Ukraine by the IMF depends on the decision on tariffs.
