According to Interfax, the wreck of a Russian fishing boat in the Barents Sea was rapid, the crew members were literally washed from the deck into the sea.

On December 28, the Russian fishing vessel “Onega” with 19 people on board capsized and sank in the Barents Sea, the press service of the Northwest Transport Prosecutor’s Office of the Russian Federation reported.

The statement says that only two crew members were rescued, the fate of 17 others is unknown, the search continues.

Sources told Interfax that the accident occurred in the Barents Sea, about 300 nautical miles (556 km) from Murmansk.

The crew that were pulled out of the water were in wet suits, the captain was not among them. The sailors were rescued by other fishermen who were the first to reach their distress signal, the agency source said, citing the words of the shipwreck survivors.

The fishermen, according to the source, said that the boat was quickly flooded during a storm, the crew ”.literally dragged across the deck into the sea “; they witnessed the death of at least one crew member, his body was taken to the sea, no one had time to use rescue equipment.

On the fact of the accident, the Murmansk Transport Prosecutor’s Office began to verify, the Investigative Committee of the Russian Federation opened a criminal case on the fact of violation of traffic safety regulations and the operation of maritime transport and fluvial.
