Chief Infectious Disease Specialist, USA

We are really in a critical phase now – Fauci

The specialist expects a new outbreak of the disease after Christmas and New Year. Americans will develop herd immunity, in their view, in late summer 2021.

Dr. Anthony Fauci, director of the US Center for Infectious and Allergic Diseases, said the worst moments of the coronavirus pandemic are yet to come. A new COVID-19 outbreak is expected after the Christmas and New Year holidays, the specialist said in an interview with CNN, writes Voice of America.

“It is very likely that we can expect an outbreak after the holidays, I mean Christmas and New Years. With a hospitalization rate of 120,000 people per day, we are now really in a critical phase,” said the leading infectious disease specialist of USA, explaining that during this period many citizens spend time with family members, traveling hundreds and thousands of miles away.

Fauci also added that despite requests from doctors and authorities to stay home for the holidays, not everyone listens to these recommendations.

When asked when Americans will have herd immunity to the virus, the doctor said it won’t be anytime soon.

“I think this will probably happen in the middle to the end of next summer. So I hope that by the fall we get this percentage of people needed (for herd immunity – ed.),” Said Anthony Fauci.

Prior to that, Korrespondent.net wrote that more than 19 million COVID-19 cases were detected in the United States.

We also add that a new strain of coronavirus was found in Portugal. “British” COVID-19 strain identified in tourists in Madeira. How many people are infected, the island authorities did not report.
