Hong Kong now has four underwater tunnels
The route runs at a depth of up to 60 m under the seabed. A huge drilling machine with a diameter of 17.6 m was used to lay the tunnel.
A new underwater tunnel has been opened in Hong Kong, the longest and deepest in the metropolis. This was announced on Sunday, December 27 by TASS with reference to the Department of Transportation of the China Special Administrative Region.
“The 5.5 km long tunnel connected the Tongmun area in Hong Kong’s New Territories with Lantao Island near Cheklapkok International Airport and the entrance to the giant Hong Kong-Macao-Zhuhai Bridge, which opened late of 2018, through the maritime area, “the message read.
The tunnel cost 47 billion Hong Kong dollars ($ 6.1 billion) to build and took more than seven years. Traveling for it will be free.
The route runs at a depth of up to 60 m under the seabed. A huge drilling machine with a diameter of 17.6 m was used to lay the tunnel.
This is the first underwater tunnel in Hong Kong built by drilling. Three other similar objects were built here using the shallow water bottom method in the Victoria Strait.
Recall that two years ago, China inaugurated the longest sea bridge in the world, 55 kilometers long. It connects the city of Hong Kong, Macao and Zhuhai.
Switzerland was also reported to have launched a train through the longest tunnel in the world. The 57-kilometer Gotthard Tunnel has replaced the 53.9-kilometer Japanese Seikan Tunnel, connecting the islands of Hokkaido and Honshu, from the first place.
