Market activity will be low, abrupt changes are not expected
During the last week of 2020, the dollar is expected to stabilize against the hryvnia. After a sharp rise, the exchange rate will remain around the 28.40 hryvnia level.
Maksim Parkhomenko, an analyst at Alpari, said this in a comment to RBC-Ukraine.
“A long weekend awaits us, which will reduce activity in the foreign exchange market. Therefore, a neutral dynamics of the rate is expected next week,” said the analyst.
As the analyst recalled, during the past week, the dollar against the hryvnia rose markedly in all segments of the foreign exchange market by 70 kopecks.
So, from Friday to Friday, the official exchange rate of the US dollar, set by the NBU, increased by 72 kopecks from 27.73 UAH to 28.45 UAH. The demand / supply of the dollar in the interbank market, according to the company “UkrDealing”, during the same time increased from 27.73 / 27.74 to 28.41 / 28.42. Average rates for buying / selling dollars in cash at banks increased during the week from 27.70 / 28.0 to 28.10 / 28.53.
According to him, the loss of the hryvnia this week was due to the growth of the dollar on the world market. A new strain of coronavirus and an early lockdown in Europe made many investors nervous, causing the dollar to rise.
“Furthermore, according to officials, the negotiations with the IMF are progressing well and effectively. Along with this, the Ministry of Finance was able to borrow around 22.2 billion hryvnia to finance the budget and obtained a loan from Deutsche Bank for 350 million dollars. This resource is enough to close the budget gap this year, “added the analyst.
As a reminder, the NBU sold $ 43.10 million on the interbank foreign exchange market during the week of December 21-24, 2020. At the same time, the central bank did not intervene to buy foreign exchange. Therefore, the NBU entered the market with the sale of foreign currency for the first time since the beginning of November. At the same time, in the previous two weeks there was an oversupply in the market and the NBU was buying foreign exchange.
As RBC-Ukraine reported, the NBU set the official exchange rate at 28.35 hryvnia per dollar on December 28, 2020. During the past week, the rate increased by 1.9% (from December 27.82 to December 21 ).
Note that according to the NBU forecast, record budget payments in late 2020 may put pressure on the hryvnia exchange rate.
