Repairs have been completed on the pier of the Ukrainian port tug “Yana Kapu”, which was seized by the Russian FSB in 2018. This was reported on December 25 by the “ArmiaInform” edition.

The tugboat was restored to the defenses, it will be able to perform the planned tasks. During the repair, the Yany Kapu was cleaned, defects were corrected, damaged hull and deck fragments were replaced and painted.

The main engine systems were restored, in particular the gas line, fuel pumps, valves of the fire system and compressors were repaired. Also on the trailer, lower intake equipment, steering and anchoring devices, electrical equipment and internal installations were repaired, the post noted.

“Yany Kapu” has undergone repairs in Odessa, in the port of its permanent deployment, since the beginning of May 2020. It was relocated there after a lengthy repair (which started in February 2020) at the Ochakov naval base, Mykolaiv region. The tug arrived only in Odessa.

On November 25, 2018, the Russian Federation fired on and seized the ships Berdyansk and Nikopol in the Black Sea, as well as the tugboat Yana Kapu, which was returning to Odessa after attempting to pass through the Kerch Strait to the Sea of Azov. The Russian security forces detained 24 Ukrainian sailors, then they were arrested in the Crimean “courts” and transported to Moscow. All Ukrainians were accused of illegally crossing the Russian border.

In April 2019, Ukraine appealed to the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea, demanding, as temporary measures, to force the Russian Federation to immediately release the sailors and ships. The Russian side refused to participate in the hearings.

On May 25, a court in Hamburg ordered Russia to immediately release three detained Ukrainian ships, as well as 24 detained sailors, and allow them to return to Ukraine. The deadline for the implementation of the decision expired on June 25.

An exchange of detainees in the format “35 to 35” took place on 7 September between Ukraine and the Russian Federation. Among those who returned to their homeland are 24 Ukrainian sailors captured by Russia after the incident near the Kerch Strait. The case against them in the Russian Federation was not closed.

In November, Russia agreed to return the ships. On November 20 they reached Ochakov. Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky noted that Russia returned the ships without any conditions.

Chief of Staff Ruslan Khomchak said the ships had been looted.

According to preliminary estimates, the amount of losses caused by Russia to three ships of the Naval Forces of the Armed Forces of Ukraine is at least 55.5 million UAH, said Igor, Deputy Permanent Representative of Ukraine to International Organizations in Vienna. Lossovsky.
