A group of archaeologists during the excavations in Pemmelt, which is called “German Stonehenge”, established how ritual sacrifices were performed in the Bronze Age.

The description of the discoveries is published by the thematic publication Archaelogy.

The structure was discovered in 1991 and consists of concentric rings formed by old ditches and embankments. It resembles the British Stonehenge in size, and the main difference is that in the German analogue, instead of stone pillars, wooden pillars were used, which is why scientists nicknamed it Woodhenge.

Inside the structure, a group of archaeologists discovered funerals of several men, as well as the remains of several dozen women and children with traces of violent death, who were murdered and thrown into the ditch. According to scientists, it was a ritual sacrifice during the Bronze Age.

After conducting a radiocarbon analysis, the experts concluded that Woodhenge it operated for 400 years, approximately from 2400 to 2050 BC. C., at the same time as its British counterpart, Stonehenge.

During the summer excavations, archaeologists also discovered that next to the complex there was a large settlement. After opening the cultural layer, the researchers mapped the contours of 65 rectangular houses measuring 15 to 30 meters along the long side. It turned out that all the structures have a similar structure: they were oriented in advance from west to east, the door for everyone is on the south side. The entrance to the buildings, in turn, is protected from the wind by a kind of lobby.

The total population of such a village is about a thousand people, and at that time they are large numbers. Furthermore, the settlement existed simultaneously with the ritual complex.

Before we said that Archaeologists stumbled upon traces of the ancient supertsunamithat hit people 10,000 years ago.
