The Oktyabrsky District Court of Saint Petersburg has found historian Oleg Sokolov guilty of the murder of 24-year-old graduate student Anastasia Yeshchenko and illegal possession of weapons.
UPD 2:57 PM Sokolov was sentenced to 12.5 years of strict regime, RIA Novosti reports.
According to Novaya Gazeta, the prosecution demanded 15 years in a strict regime colony for Sokolov, 64: 13 years for murder and two more for illegal possession of weapons.
Sokolov admitted his guilt and declared that he regretted what he had done.
Former associate professor at Saint Petersburg State University and Knight of the French Order of the Legion of Honor Oleg Sokolov was found on November 10, 2019 in a river near the Moika embankment in Saint Petersburg. In the scientist’s backpack were two severed female hands and a pistol, and in his apartment was the dismembered corpse of 24-year-old graduate student Anastasia Yeshchenko, with whom he had been meeting for five years.
During interrogation, Sokolov confessed to the murder and dismemberment of his former student. The court took him into custody.
