Ukrainian Alexander Shumkov, who was sentenced to prison in Russia for belonging to the “Right Sector”, returned to his homeland.

Ukrainian political prisoner Alexander Shumkov, who spent more than three years in prison in the Russian Federation, returned to Ukraine today. Verkhovna Rada Human Rights Commissioner Lyudmila Denisova announced this on her Facebook page.

“Now he crossed the Russian-Ukrainian border and arrived at the Bachevsk car checkpoint, where he was received by his relatives, a representative of the Commissioner’s Office and representatives of the territorial bodies of the military administration of the Armed Forces of Ukraine,” Denisova wrote.

Shumkov went to Kherson to a military unit, where he served before his arrest.

Sevskiy District Court of Bryansk Region December 4, 2018 sentenced Shumkov to four years in prison general regime of belonging to the “Right Sector”. According to the case materials, Shumkov “for a long time” was the bodyguard of the former leader of the “Right Sector” Dmitry Yarosh.

The Ukrainian said that in late August 2017, FSB agents kidnapped him and transported him to Russian territory. According to Shumkov, at the time of the kidnapping he was an active member of the 11th Separate Brigade of the Army Aviation of the Armed Forces of Ukraine (stationed in the village of Chernobaevka, Kherson region).

In April 2019, Shumkov testified that Russian jailers beat him twice.

On October 15, 2019, Shumkov went on a hunger strike, demanding that Russia stop blackmailing prisoners in negotiations in the Minsk and Normandy formats. On October 23, he was admitted to the hospital. On November 7, the Ukrainian ended his hunger strike.

In April this year, Shumkov was sent to a detachment under strict conditions of detention.

In November, Denisova again reported that Shumkov had been beaten in the colony.
