Ukrainian political prisoner Alexander Shumkov returned to Ukraine. A soldier of the Armed Forces of Ukraine has been illegally detained for more than three years in a correctional colony in the city of Torzhok, Tver region, Russia.
Ombudsman Lyudmila Denisova announced this on Telegram.
According to her, Shumkov crossed the border between Russia and Ukraine and reached the Bachevsk checkpoint. There he was received by relatives, a representative of the Ombudsman’s Office and representatives of the territorial bodies of the military command of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.
“Today Alexander will go to Kherson to the military unit, where he did his military service before being arrested,” Denisova said.
The Ombudsman added that Shumkov was released from the colony on December 23, but was transferred to the “temporary detention center for foreign nationals of the RF Interior Ministry in the Tver region”.
As a reminder, at the end of August 2017, Alexander Shumkov was kidnapped by officers of the Russian special services and taken to the territory of Russia. At the time of the kidnapping, Shumkov was an active duty member of the 11th Separate Aviation Brigade of the Army of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.
In early December 2018, in the Bryansk region, the Sevsky court sentenced Shumkov, 29, to four years in prison for participating in the organization of the Right Sector under article 282.2 of the Criminal Code of the Federation of Russia (organizing the activities of an extremist organization).
