A Warning on How Politics, Populism, and Propaganda Kill Scientists’ Efforts
The Russian Sputnik V vaccine has been in a slow third stage of clinical trials for several months. Its efficacy and safety profile has not yet been determined or published.
But Russia would not be Russia if it could quietly wait for the results. The propagandists of imperial greatness couldn’t tolerate the bloody bourgeoisie starting using their vaccines a couple of months earlier, so the Sputnik V vaccination program was launched before the end of clinical trials.
As a result, volunteers participating in clinical trials began dropping out en masse to be guaranteed to be vaccinated with the vaccine and not have a 50% blind chance of receiving a placebo.
You can no longer wait for normal results in the efficiency of Satellite V
The fact that this was the case was clear to the hedgehog: one of the main motivations for enrolling in volunteers is the possibility of receiving the vaccine as soon as possible, when there is no other way to get it. And if you can go to the clinic and get vaccinated with a 100% chance, why bother with a 50% chance?
In addition, many of the trial participants were quickly tested for antibodies and, after making sure there were no antibodies and receiving a placebo, they happily went and were vaccinated. As a result, they were also lost to research – this is no longer a placebo group.
As a result, it became clear that the placebo group was no longer stupidly recruited, there were not enough people. Furthermore, the study of effectiveness can no longer be considered pure; after all, it began in the absence of vaccination and now continues in the context of planned mass vaccination of the population. Now it’s not clear what to compare with, because the baseline probability of getting sick changes uncontrollably during the experiment, and people who received a placebo had a higher chance of infection earlier than those who received it now.
All of this led to a logical end: the vaccine developers announced that they would completely stop administering placebo.

Therefore, we can no longer expect normal results in the efficiency of Sputnik V. At least from Russia. There may be data on the frequency of side effects, but this is not certain.
Some strongly indirect conclusions about effectiveness could be drawn in a couple of months, looking at the population effect of vaccination in the Russian Federation: if the incidence had successfully disappeared, then it could be concluded that the vaccine works more than it does not work. But the problem is that Russia … how could I put it mildly … presents an artistic hiss so pretentious as statistics that it is simply impossible to draw conclusions; what the older comrade said, they are going to whistle.
The conclusion is that:
– Russia massively vaccinates its population without anyone knowing what.
– It is unknown that it is almost guaranteed that it will not be licensed anywhere where the GLP / GCP / GMP standards apply. (in any case, in Ukraine they are still in force, if Minister Stepanov has not secretly canceled them).
– There will be objective data on the effectiveness of what is known will not be – it simply cannot be obtained from.
Of course, I understand that in Ukraine there will still be many people who want to get vaccinated with Sputnik V, but even the Chinese CoronaVac inspires much more hope than this miracle.
The Chinese vaccine has not yet passed the third phase and is also fully applied in China. (which is not quite correct), but at least it has been independently tested in other countries, for example in Brazil and the Gulf countries. In the UAE and Bahrain, it has already been approved for use and reportedly showed an efficiency of 86%. Well, don’t forget that China doesn’t poison anyone as a rookie and doesn’t fight Ukraine.
If the Chinese vaccine appears in Ukraine, I would test it, especially since by then there will be the results of the Brazilian clinical trials.
