The icon, which was handed over by the President of the Presidium of Bosnia and Herzegovina, Milorad Dodik, to the Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, was returned “according to the donor,” the Russian Foreign Ministry said. According to the Ministry of Culture and Information Policy of Ukraine, the seal of the icon indicates that it is owned by Ukraine.

Russia presented an icon to the Embassy of Bosnia and Herzegovina, which was presented to the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation, Sergey Lavrov, by the President of the Presidium of Bosnia and Herzegovina, Milorad Dodik. TASS reported this on December 23, citing information from the Russian Foreign Ministry.

The icon was donated “by agreement with the donor,” the agency writes. At the same time, Russia’s foreign policy department “recommended that the partners use available legal mechanisms to clarify all the circumstances of this case, including the origin of the artifact.”

Lavrov paid an official visit to Bosnia and Herzegovina from December 14-15. Later it became known that Dodik gave the Russian minister a golden icon, created about 300 years ago.

The Ukrainian Embassy in Bosnia and Herzegovina sent a note to the government of the country demanding to know how the golden icon of Lugansk ended up in the country. According to the Ministry of Culture of Ukraine, the seal on the icon indicates that it is owned by Ukraine.

The Bosnia and Herzegovina prosecutor’s office has launched an investigation into the case of the Ukrainian icon, Dnevni Avaz reported. Disaster wants to find out how the artifact got into the country.

The Russian Foreign Ministry previously announced that it would return the icon to the donor to clarify its origin through Interpol.
