Vitaly Markiv faces life in prison in Russia
The murder charge was brought against the Ukrainian taking into account “the testimony of witnesses and other materials from the criminal case.”
In Russia, Vitaly Markiv, a soldier in the Ukrainian National Guard, was charged with the murder of two journalists in Donbas. This is stated in a message on the website of the Russian Investigative Committee on Wednesday, December 23.
According to the Russian investigation, on May 25, 2014, near Sloviansk in the Donetsk region, Markiv allegedly handed over the coordinates of Russian national Andrei Mironov, Italian photojournalist Andrea Rocchelli and French journalist William Roguelon commanding an artillery strike .
The Investigation Committee claims that they were following the railway crossing in Andreevka village and Markiv reportedly opened fire with a Kalashnikov assault rifle to prevent them from leaving the area before the shelling.
“As a result of the artillery attack provoked by Markiv, Mironov and Rocchelli, who did not participate in the armed confrontation, were killed and Roguelon was wounded,” the message says.
It is also reported that the homicide charge was presented taking into account “the testimony of witnesses and other materials from the criminal process.” Markiv in Russia is facing life in prison.
It was previously reported that in Russia the court arrested in absentia and put Markiv on the wanted list.
At the same time, in November, an appeals court in Milan fully acquitted Markiv after the first instance sentenced him to 24 years in prison. He returned to Ukraine and was reinstated in the service of the National Guard.
