Gennady Kernes left the parks for Kharkov under the safety of municipal property, a $ 200,000 bathroom and multi-million dollar loans. Now the city prepares to say goodbye to its leader. The townspeople elected Kernes as mayor three times: even when he was never seen during the election campaign, because since September he had been undergoing treatment in a Berlin clinic.
About the paradox of a great city and its beloved leader – see TSN 19:30.
On the walls of the Kharkiv City Hall are portraits of former mayors: Evgeny Kushnarev, who was killed while hunting, and Mikhail Dobkin, who ruled Kharkiv in 2006-2010, but was in fact led by Kernes himself. His portrait is not here yet, as are the plates in his office. There’s still a joke here: this is a room that doesn’t need a signature. Kernes can’t come into the office today.
If you ask the citizens of Kharkiv to show you around the city, they will definitely take you to Gorky Park. Kharkov’s pride: everyone calls it “Kernes’s personal achievement.” Although everything here was bought on credit.
“This loan includes the property of the metro and the city hall. It is not a simple loan, but a guarantee,” says Evgeny Lisichkin, co-founder of the Kharkiv anti-corruption center.
For years Evgeny Lisichkin studied the schemes that were used when Gorky Park was restored:
“You are buying rolled grass and it is three times more expensive than what we would have bought at market prices.”
One of the most outrageous places in the park is the $ 200,000 toilet. And all this does not bring money to the city. The editor-in-chief of the local website, Oleg Skripnik, shows numerous news about crazy types of money laundering schemes:
“Since the beginning of 2020, the park has earned 32 thousand hryvnia with all the restoration points and dozens of attractions.”
All the media that did not belong to him spoke of the corruption of Kernes. If the citizens of Kharkiv know this, why did they choose him even on his deathbed?
Researcher Marina Nikolaeva devoted many hours of news reporting to the Kernes schemes, but the electorate still chose this tough business executive:
“We saw that he was a true teacher. Strong in his word.”
The Kharkov brand for many years – so says his colleague and now City Secretary Igor Terekhov about Kernes. Terekhov is not concerned about the promissory notes and promises to complete the construction of a free zoo. The City Council secretary wants Kernes not to be forgotten in Kharkiv and will invite the deputies to immortalize his name:
“I am initiating this question to name one of the avenues in the city of Kharkov.”
One of the most likely options is Science Avenue. It houses the National Hotel, where Kernes lived. It took up the entire second floor. The hotel has flowers and flags at half mast. And in the rooms, on television, on the channel associated with Kernes, they constantly say that Kharkov is yearning.
Remember that the body of Kharkov chief Gennady Kernes was handed over to Ukraine. It was brought in on a charter plane, which took off from Berlin around 17:00 Kiev time. There, at the Charité clinic, Kernes received treatment for complications from the coronavirus.
