Ukraine has approved a plan to vaccinate the population against COVID-19.

According to the Center for Public Health, the document was prepared by specialists from the Ministry of Health, together with experts from WHO and UNICEF.

The plan includes four stages of vaccination of the population:

  • January-April 2021 – people at high risk of infection and development of COVID-19 and those who play critical roles in the fight against the COVID-19 pandemic;
  • April-June 2021 – people at extremely high risk of infection and development of COVID-19 and those who provide medical services;
  • June-September 2021 – people at high risk of contagion and development of COVID-19 and those who carry out functions of maintaining the security and life of the state;
  • September 2021 – March 2022 – people with a higher risk of contagion and development of COVID-19 and those who carry out functions of maintaining the security and life of the state.

Vaccinations will be carried out at existing vaccination sites, mobile immunization teams, as well as temporary vaccination centers.

The plan will be updated every two weeks to reflect the actual situation.

The basic part of the document identifies the objective, target groups, logistics routes, medical training, communication, and deployment of mobile teams. It can only be changed if radically new information is received.

We will constantly update the part that indicates the vaccine development stages, qualification and registration procedures, as well as the topic of vaccine supply.

«This document will be flexible, it will be updated depending on the situation with COVID-19, updated data on vaccines, on the availability of the vaccine itself against the disease, ”explained the acting president. General Director of the CPH Igor Kuzin.

According to him, the goal of the plan is to cover at least 50% of Ukraine’s population with vaccination against COVID-19 during 2021-2022. (20 million people).

«Vaccination against COVID-19 in Ukraine will be voluntary for all population groups and professional risk groups. Its implementation will not interfere with routine vaccination according to the vaccination schedule to avoid a decrease in the level of vaccination against other diseases ”, added Kuzin.

The head of the health center also said that vaccination for Ukrainians from the uncontrolled territory of Ukraine will also be available; the corresponding procedure will be approved by a separate plan.

When will the coronavirus vaccine appear in Ukraine?

Ukraine, as part of the COVAX initiative, signed technical documents on the supply of 8 million doses of the COVID-19 vaccine, which should arrive approximately in the spring of 2021.

The head of the Ministry of Health, Maxim Stepanov, said that by purchasing a vaccine, the state will immediately provide free vaccination to people in risk groups.

It is not yet known whose vaccine will be delivered to Ukraine; negotiations are ongoing with all companies. However, the Ministry of Health assured that Ukraine would not buy the Russian vaccine against COVID-19.

According to NSDC calculations, the coronavirus vaccine in Ukraine will appear in the beginning of the second quarter of 2021, but the mass vaccination will not start before the middle of the year.

The main vaccination scenarios will be carried out using mobile teams and fixed points. About 1.7 million vaccines are expected to be administered monthly.

According to the Center for Public Health, the 12 priority populations that should be the first to receive vaccines are:

  • health workers;
  • military;
  • teachers
  • old people;
  • people who live in social institutions;
  • people with concomitant diseases, etc.

In total, almost 21 million people receive priority vaccines (20 866 390), or 50% of the population of Ukraine.

People who have already had COVID-19 will also need to get vaccinated.
