Saúl Álvarez won again. After the loss to Floyd Mayweather, he remains undefeated and rarely asks questions about the umpires’ decisions. Álvarez is the undisputed leader of P4R. He weighs again, nails the champion there, removes his belt, and goes about his business.
We saw no competition or rivalry, despite the huge difference in anthropometry between Canelo and Callum Smith.
Álvarez clearly knew what would happen and how to act
Despite the size difference or the fact that this weight is comfortable for Smith, Canelo immediately went ahead. He didn’t rush, he didn’t run, but he was like the owner of the ring, who knows that he will definitely catch the opponent.
The difference in the extension of the arms of more than four inches did not bother Alvarez at all. He hit well and did even better than a tall opponent. Precision, composure, and confidence and strength are Canelo’s main path to victory.
With each round, Saul grew hotter and hotter, and the blows were more and more frequent. In general, from the first seconds of the fight, as always lately, Alvarez is not trying to overload the opponent in warmrate or outbomb at a convenient distance. Canelo calmly pursues his opponent, relying on the precision and power of the blow. That with the first, that with the second there are no problems, and in the case of Smith, even more so.
Callum began to back off, work on the waste, and accept. This is not to say that Smith did not try. It worked like a jab, mostly passed. I tried to catch my opponent on a quick pull, hitting him with the right past (in most cases), and if he hit him, it had no effect. I tried to hit the left side, the same as with the right rectum. And these are the shots that brought guys down at this weight when Canelo was just thinking about a few transitions. The possessor of Saul is on some intergalactic level.

After halfway through the fight, Alvarez switched even more to power shots. He felt the distance, in response everything flew by, then toward the block, or flew in, but not to be scared. Saul began to work in series, pouring on the ground, pressing the opponent against the ropes. With every three minutes, it became clearer that Callum was done the moment he realized his punch wasn’t working here. For whatever reason, Saul’s ability to avoid punches will likely never cease to amaze, and will have fans wondering if it’s from nature or was obtained illegally.
In the ninth, Canelo broke: accurate shots, pressure, dodging almost all counterattacks. Callum couldn’t hit at all. Pulling my marked blanks – by. I threw it again, it flew tangentially. Álvarez is not the best fighter on his feet, but he is a true genius on defense with his body and punches. By the end of the round, Smith had a broken nose and seemed extremely unbiased. The question of what, perhaps, it is worth taking the guy out of the fight should have stayed in the corner. But he did not get up and the Briton continued.
Champion rounds are no better. Alvarez poured, Smith received and also surprised with a headline. Kovalev collapsed after this, and the Briton even tried to defend himself. Let everything turn to milk.
Great fight from Saul, pretty mediocre show from Smith. We saw the P4P leader in action again and saw Callum’s cons. An overwhelming victory absolutely deserved by points and two belts at the same time in the old-new category for the Mexican. The guy produces historic achievements, but he’s only thirty years old.
Can anyone beat Álvarez?
Quite a logical question, considering that Saúl last lost in 2013. He was still young and inexperienced then, and Floyd put on a great performance, leaving Alvarez out of work.

Yes, Saul can be defeated. More precisely, you can try to win, not look as bad as all the past opponents, and possibly achieve the result you need, not Alvarez. But for this one should not play boxing with Canelo. In the intellectual fight in the ring, he will now surpass almost everyone. As soon as the positional wars begin, the opponent grabs dozens of times more than he gives.
With Álvarez you need good footwork, high rhythm and constant movement. Ability to counter his methodical pressure through his footwork. Ability to work like an aggressive number two. Ability to withstand heavy blows, which will definitely be in a battle with Saul.
Who could do this as a super middleweight? Yes, probably no one. Smith was one of the strongest champions here. Billy Joe Saunders and Callum Smith are fine on their feet, but barely to the point of stumbling Alvarez through all twelve rounds. Expecting someone to reject Saul is expecting Mr. Smith to come get you, sit in the office, and get you out of the Matrix.
There are already two candidates for victory in the light heavyweight category: Arthur Beterbiev and Dmitry Bivol. The second can do a lot in the ring. He can punch and move and is generally a fairly technical fighter on the verge of boredom in the face of many spectators. But that does not matter now.
Beterbiev is simply powerful. He is extremely strong physically, he hits extremely hard with both hands. Technically, of course, he won’t outperform Alvarez, but he doesn’t need to. If Arthur gains momentum, it will be painful and difficult for anyone. Also, little Canelo.
So what’s next?
Of course, Saúl will not move up to light heavyweight again. At least in the near future. For what? There he got the belt, knocked out the champion. Even as a super middleweight, it makes more sense for him to stay than to get back up where he just left.

Everything will depend on the next opponent. Both Canelo and Golovkin agreed in absentia that they were ready to fight for the third time. So far, the score is in Álvarez’s favor: a draw and a victory for Saúl. Golovkin was fine in the last fight, although the opponent was pretty mediocre. He moved, he thought, kept pace, charged. Yes, he didn’t put Sheremet off his shot, but Gennady hasn’t been betting on a single shot lately, and he returned his boxing to a level that’s nice to see.
It’s hard to believe in his win over Saul, but Golovkin is moving in the right direction. A boxer with this style can create a lot of problems for Alvarez. Also, if you have to drop back to average weight.
But, judging from the post-fight comment, Canelo agrees to remain super middleweight. He is also interested in belts and absolute status, so everything will depend on other champions. DAZN will definitely want to see a fight with Golovkin, but given their relationship with the boxer, they won’t be able to demand anything. We will have to negotiate.
But even the fights with Smith or Saunders are interesting. Although it is not as monetary and exciting as the third battle against Golovkin.
