Taiwan’s Wistron Corp plant in Karnataka makes low-cost iPhone SE phones.
Apple has suspended the transfer of orders to Taiwanese iPhone assembler Wistron, which owns a factory in the Indian state of Karnataka. Bloomberg reports on this on Saturday, December 19.
The decision was made after nearly 1,000 workers ransacked Wistron’s factory and offices last week for non-payment of wages. The total damage was approximately $ 7 million. After the defeat, the state police arrested 128 people, another 300 were detained for questioning.
The publication notes that when hiring workers they were promised a salary of 21 lakhs ($ 286), then the salary dropped to 16 lakhs per month ($ 217), and then to 12 lakhs ($ 163).
“Apple employees and independent auditors hired by Apple worked around the clock to investigate problems at the Wistron facility in Narasapur. While these investigations are ongoing, our preliminary findings indicate violations of our Supplier Code of Conduct. This caused delays in payments to some workers in October and November. We put Wistron to the test and they will not receive new orders from Apple until the situation is corrected, ”the company said in a statement.
In turn, Wistron admitted that some of the plant’s workers were not being paid properly.
“The company has decided to fire the senior manager who oversaw the company’s business in India,” the statement said.
We will recall that on December 13 in the Indian state of Karnataka, workers looted the office of a plant where Apple phones are produced. The eyewitness video was posted by the Newsflare website. About a thousand people gathered in front of the building and demanded to pay the back wages. The conflict turned into riots, the protesters were dispersed by the police with batons.
