The lights of the main New Year tree in the country were lit on Sofia Square in Kiev. During the launch of the fireworks, the decoration caught fire, but was quickly extinguished, reports an NV correspondent.
After the solemn lighting of the lights, fireworks and pyrotechnics were launched. Soon, behind the host, from the direction of the Cathedral of Saint Sophia, the landscape caught fire. He reassured those present.

One of the firefighters confirmed to Suspilny that the flame had spread into the rain on a stuffed animal that adorned the Christmas tree.
«Pyrotechnic fires were lit in Sofiyskaya Square, as a result of which the garland of the Christmas tree was lit up. The service personnel extinguished the fire with a powder extinguisher, ”said the State Emergency Service.
This year, an artificial Christmas tree with a height of 31 meters was installed in the center of Kiev, which is decorated with 1,500 toys and more than 10 km of garlands. The theme of the Sophia Square New Year’s decoration is a magical forest, so the top of the tree was first decorated with a fairy hat.
But due to the discussion on social media and criticism from the Ukrainian Orthodox Church and various Protestant churches, he took his hat off the tree. On December 17, a traditional Christmas star was installed in its place.
