Sony will remove Cyberpunk 2077 from the PS Store and offer a full refund to anyone who purchased the game from their digital store. On the night of December 18, the company made an announcement.
Sony’s move was a response to the ongoing scandal surrounding the new game by Polish developers at CD Projekt: They are accused of trying to manipulate the rating by giving only the PC version to the press for review. The day before, VentureBeat journalist Jeff Grubb wrote a very nasty column about how CD Projekt groomed everyone to save their own reputation.
Sony has launched a special page on the PS Store where you can request a refund by first logging into the PSN system.
At the same time, Cyberpunk 2077 was temporarily withdrawn from the market. It is no longer available in the PS Store catalog. When Cyberpunk 2077 becomes available for purchase on the PS Store again, it was not specified.
Cyberpunk 2077 launched on December 10 on consoles and PC. On December 12, CD Projekt released patch 1.04 with many fixes. On December 14, the developers publicly apologized for the failed release of Cyberpunk 2077 on PS4 and Xbox One, promising fixes and a refund. However, getting the promised performance in practice turned out to be very problematic: on the same day, gamers began to complain en masse about denials of Sony and Microsoft applications.
Microsoft will most likely do the same, but so far there have been no statements from the company.
CD Projekt posted a separate statement commenting on Sony’s decision on its investor site (PDF):
“The decision came after our discussion with Sony Interactive Entertainment about a full refund for all players who purchased Cyberpunk 2077 through the PlayStation Store and are now seeking a refund. All copies of the game previously digitally purchased from the PlayStation Store remain available for use by their respective customers. Players can still purchase physical copies of the game from retail stores and order them by mail. All copies of the game (digital or physical) will continue to receive full support and all necessary updates. “
Cyberpunk 2077 will receive a second update in the coming days. In parallel, the developers are preparing two more important patches that will be released in January and February 2021. In a recent urgent meeting with investors, the senior managers of CD Projekt promised to correct all the bugs and errors, and to bring the versions for the consoles of the outgoing generation to a reproducible state.
Authorized analyst Daniel Ahmad in a series of tweets it gave your assessment of what is happening. He described the current CD Projekt public relations disaster as an unprecedented event for the gaming industry. He also expressed concern that the situation could have significant consequences: CD Projekt’s actions will most likely force platform owners to make changes to the game’s certification process, significantly complicating it for all developers. Additionally, Sony and Microsoft are believed to be able to file lawsuits against the developers of Cyberpunk 2077, who previously bragged that they allegedly managed to bypass the certification process for Xbox and PlayStation.
