During a visit to Bosnia and Herzegovina, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov received an old icon taken from Lugansk. Ukraine demands an explanation of how the icon entered the country from the city that is currently occupied and why it was handed over to Lavrov.

Oleg Nikolenko, the Foreign Ministry spokesman, told RBC-Ukraine in a comment about this.

According to him, the Foreign Ministry is aware of the situation.

“The Embassy of Ukraine sent an official note to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Bosnia and Herzegovina demanding that explanations and full information be provided on the circumstances of this case. The Ukrainian side also expects a meeting with official representatives of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Bosnia and Herzegovina. The meeting should take place in the next few days, “Nikolenko said.

He also stressed that Sarajevo is obliged to explain how the icon ended up in this country and what circumstances led to its presentation to the Russian minister.

Note that the Bosnian media reported that the head of the Republika Srpska (a region of Bosnia and Herzegovina), Milorad Dodik, in a meeting with Lavrov on December 12, presented him with an icon. It turned out that this golden icon is about 300 years old, it was taken from Lugansk and the seal indicates that it is the property of the Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic.
