«I can’t give you a clear date when we’re planning the funeral. But the most likely is that it will be from Tuesday to Wednesday, maximum Thursday of next week, “he said.
According to him, the funeral of Kernes will take place in the Cathedral of the Annunciation. Then there will be a farewell ceremony, which will be organized on the territory of the Kharkov National Opera and Ballet Theater. (ХНАТОБ).
The official added that the farewell ceremony will last about four hours, approximately from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., everyone must adhere to a social distance and wear masks.
Terekhov ordered to organize screens to broadcast the funeral and the farewell ceremony, as well as sound reinforcement in the cemetery, where the funeral meeting is scheduled.
Deputy Mayor Yevgeny Vodovozov said that on the day of Kernes’ funeral, traffic in central Kharkiv will be limited and public transport routes will be changed.
«I understand that the difficulty is that we do not know the date. It does not depend on us. It depends on the procedure currently being carried out in Germany, we will understand it, I think, closer to Friday. We will understand this situation by the end of Friday, ”said Terekhov.
Terekhov avoided answering the question of which cemetery Kernes would be buried in, saying only that he would be buried in the honorary alley.
«He will be buried in the honorary alley, where the most prominent citizens of Kharkiv are buried here. We made that decision with Gennady Adolfovich’s family, ”Terekhov said.
According to Interfax-Ukraine, two cemeteries in the city are currently being considered: the second and the thirteenth.
On the night of December 17, Gennady Kernes, 61, died at the Berlin Charite clinic from the effects of the coronavirus. He served as mayor of Kharkiv since 2010.
On November 4, 2020, the Kharkiv City Territorial Election Commission recognized Kernes as mayor-elect. He received the highest number of votes from the voters who participated in the elections: 60.34% of the voters voted for him.
Gennady Kernes received the powers of the mayor of Kharkov at the first session of the Kharkov City Council on December 9. He was declared mayor without being sworn in.
