On December 11, it became known that Kernes had kidney failure, was on one hundred percent dialysis – the artificial removal of waste products and excess fluid from the body.
In September, Kernes fell to the hospital due to the coronavirus infection. On 16 September he was airlifted to the German Charite clinic. According to the city council, he began to experience an exacerbation of chronic diseases that he received as a result of the assassination attempt in 2014.
Gennady Kernes received the powers of the mayor of Kharkov at the first session of the Kharkov City Council on December 9. He was declared mayor without being sworn in.
Kernes has served as mayor of Kharkov since 2010.
On April 28, 2014, an attempt was made against Kernes. During the race, the official was seriously injured by a firearm. After the assassination attempt, Kernes moved around in a wheelchair.
