Mike Pompeo lists threats to stability in the Mediterranean posed by Russia
Russia acts only to promote its own interests to the detriment of the entire region, said the head of the State Department.
Russia threatens stability in the Mediterranean region by using disinformation methods and fueling discord between countries. This is stated in a statement by the Secretary of State of the United States, Mike Pompeo, published on Tuesday, December 15.
“Russia continues to threaten the stability of the Mediterranean, using various methods to spread misinformation, undermine national sovereignty and wreak havoc, conflict and divisions in the states of the region,” he says.
Among the threats to stability in the Mediterranean posed by Russia, Pompeo mentioned support for Bashar al-Assad’s government in Syria.
“His war against his own people has exacerbated regional instability, caused a protracted humanitarian crisis and the displacement of half the population,” the statement said.
Pompeo also said that Russia continues to violate the arms embargo against Libya.
“In Libya, Russia supported the offensive (Khalifa Haftar supporters – ed.) On the Libyan capital Tripoli, killing civilians and undermining the UN’s efforts to bring peace to the country. Furthermore, Russia continues to violate the arms embargo of the UN, “the US Secretary of State said in a statement.
According to Pompeo, wealthy Russians, most of whom have ties to the Kremlin, have laundered billions of dollars through Cyprus and Malta, leading to problems in domestic markets and widespread corruption in countries.
The secretary added that in Greece, Moscow is trying with its actions, in particular, to interfere in internal religious matters.
“This list can go on. All these actions clearly show that if anyone is playing political games and trying to stop progress in regional conflicts, it is Russia, acting only to advance its own interests to the detriment of the entire region,” Pompeo said.
We will remember, in November in Libya the terms of the armistice were agreed. The Libyan opposition military delegations and the official government agreed on a roadmap for the implementation of the recently signed ceasefire agreement.
