Maidan police demolished protesters’ tents, clashes escalated – video

Police said they had set up the tents without permission and started cleaning them. The protesters responded by throwing firecrackers and smoke bombs at the security forces, ripping off their masks. According to Suspilny, the police used flash grenades and tear gas.

The hromadske publication writes that several tents survived and many of the victims are now in the hotel in Ukraine.

Protesters near ambulances prevented the police from receiving medical attention, sparking a verbal skirmish.

Suspilne reports that as of 17:00 the security forces had moved away from the protesters, the protest action continues.

Updated at 19:34. According to RBC-Ukraine, the organizers of the action have already set up new tents on the Maidan. They plan to spend the night there. The agency reports that most of the security officers left Khreshchatyk and now the situation in the center is calm. About 200 protesters remain in Maidan Nezalezhnosti.

The Ministry of the Interior of Ukraine reported that «a group of drunks attacked the police ”, for which they were hospitalized with injuries and broken faces. Criminal proceedings have been opened under art. 3. 4. 5 (threat or violence against a law enforcement officer).

On December 15, representatives of small businesses protested against the Cabinet of Ministers decision to introduce a shutdown in Ukraine from January 8 to 24.

The rally started in the government quarter. In addition, the protesters gathered in the Plaza de la Independencia.

When protesters tried to set up tents on the Maidan, clashes broke out, police reported that 40 employees were injured.

The number of protesters injured is unknown. Activists reported hospitalizations.

According to the decision of the Cabinet of Ministers, the quarantine in Ukraine will be tightened from January 8 to 24 inclusive.

During the quarantine period, work will be prohibited:

  • cafes, restaurants and bars (except for delivery and takeout);
  • non-food stores;
  • cinemas, fitness clubs, gyms, theaters, and shopping and entertainment centers;
  • educational institutions, except kindergartens;
  • Massive events.
