Cherkasy Mayor Anatoly Bondarenko has publicly apologized to Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky. Bondarenko posted the corresponding video message on his Facebook page.
“We must forget about the confrontation between the mayor and the president. As mayor, I would like to apologize to the president for the fact that, in principle, I did not defend myself, but the residents of the city. Recall that in May 2020, Anatoly Bondarenko became a defendant in the scandal associated with the coronavirus epidemic. The Executive Committee of the Cherkasy City Council, by its decree, decided to ease quarantine restrictions in the city from May 1, that is, even before the weakening across the country began.
Later, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy conveyed “greetings from the SBU and the Interior Ministry” to Anatoly Bondarenko and called him a bandit. In response, the mayor of Cherkasy went to court to demand protection of honor and dignity, but lost the case.
In addition, the National Police opened criminal proceedings against the city chief in connection with the decision of the Cherkasy municipality.
Note that Bondarenko was re-elected mayor of Cherkasy in the 2020 local elections.
