Until the end of the first half of the meeting, the Mancunians desperately tried to create at least one dangerous moment, but were unsuccessful in their efforts. The teams took a break with a comfortable lead from the hosts.
Immediately after the resumption of the game, Solskjaer changed his tactical scheme, moving to a game of four defenders. His players immediately took possession of the ball, hoping to score an early goal. They got some pieces from set pieces, but again they were unsuccessful. In addition, United players loaded the ball into the penalty area in positional attacks, but still did not reach dangerous moments. Solskjaer released Pogba on the field, who was supposed to finally add an advantage to the teams ahead. The guests continued to attack and eventually began to hit the goal.
The Mancunians began to put pressure on Gulachi’s possessions, which almost led to a goal. The crossbar saved the “bulls” after a direct free kick from Fernandes. And a minute later, Leipzig unexpectedly scored. The ball hit Nkunku’s shoulder after an Angelinho pass and bounced towards Kluivert, while Justin beat De Gea 3-0. After a missed goal, the guests with almost the entire composition moved to the outer half of the field. They literally besieged Gulachi’s gate, inflicting many blows from different distances. Some of them were inaccurate, while in other cases the goalkeeper had to rescue his defenders.
The guests continued to carry out attack after attack, thanks to which they still had a real chance to score: Greenwood earned a penalty after contact with Konate. Subsequently, Fernandes approached the ball and confidently converted a penalty kick – 3: 1. And after two minutes, Solskjaer’s defenses stunned the opponent, scoring again. Pogba hit his head after a corner kick, after which the ball hit Maguire and flew towards the goal – 3: 2. Feeling that “the case smells of fried”, the hosts took the ball under their control, leaving attack. But they spent quite a bit of time on the other side of the field, then again focusing on defense.
The United players took a few more shots on goal, but they weren’t dangerous. In injury time, Mukiele almost blew it all: Nordi cut the ball into his own net after a Pogba cross, but to the defender’s relief the ball hit Gulachi. Shortly after, the referee’s final whistle sounded, recording a dramatic victory for the hosts. This result brought the bulls a ticket to the round of 16. But the Mankunians will be forced to continue their participation in European competitions already in the Europa League. An excellent start to the group stage did not guarantee the “Red Devils” a group exit.
