Iran has withdrawn its offer to pay the families of those killed in the Ukraine International Airlines plane crash. They wanted to allocate funds for the compensation of the national development fund.
This was stated by the Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine, Yevhen Yenin, reports “Hromadske Radio”.
According to him, the Iranian government has withdrawn a proposal to commit 200 million euros in the 2021 budget to compensate the relatives of those killed in the plane crash.
“200 million euros were supposed to be allocated from the national development fund, leading to serious internal discussions in Iranian society, but we will welcome the plans of the Iranian government to reserve a certain amount of funds in the budget to pay compensation, “Yenin said.
He noted that negotiations with the Iranian side have not yet started on the amount of compensation.
“Ukraine’s position stems from the fact that the level of compensation will largely depend on the circumstances of the disaster and the level of cooperation of the Iranian side, in particular with Ukraine to ensure an objective and impartial investigation of the disaster,” he said the vice minister.
Iran shot down the plane of the Ukrainian airline on January 8, 2020 with two surface-to-air missiles. As a result, 176 people died. The Tehran government denied the missile attack for three days, but finally confirmed it.
Earlier, the Foreign Ministry said Ukraine could go to the UN court if the negotiation process with Iran on the UIA plane crash comes to a standstill. Tehran’s promises remain unfulfilled.
As RBC-Ukraine previously wrote, Iran will allocate 200 million euros to compensate for the UIA catastrophe, the corresponding money was provided in the country’s budget for next year.
The Ukrainian side complains that Tehran does not allow it to interrogate suspects in the UIA disaster.
