The USSR Defense Minister, Air Marshal Yevgeny Shaposhnikov died at the age of 79. TASS sources said the cause of his death was COVID-19.
The last Defense Minister of the USSR, Air Marshal, died Evgeny Shaposhnikov. On December 8, RIA Novosti reported this with reference to Nikolai Deryabin, Chief of Staff of the Military Leaders Club.
He did not mention the cause of death for Shaposhnikov, 78.
Deryabin said the funeral will be held at the Federal Military Memorial Cemetery in Mytishchi, Moscow Region.
Source of “TASS” in medical circles reportedthat Shaposhnikov died due to the COVID-19 coronavirus infection.
Shaposhnikov was Defense Minister of the USSR from August 1991 until the time of its collapse (December 1991). In the 1990s, he worked as CEO of Aeroflot and later as an assistant to the President of Russia. Since 2003, he has been a board member of the Sukhoi Design Bureau.
Shaposhnikov received the orders “For the service of the fatherland in the Armed Forces of the USSR” of the second and third degrees, the Order of the Red Star, seven medals.
