The UN General Assembly condemned the current Russian occupation of Crimea and reaffirmed its non-recognition of its annexation. This was discussed in the reinforced resolution on the militarization of Crimea, passed at yesterday’s meeting.
This was reported by the Ministry for the Reintegration of the Occupied Territories.
The UN countries emphasized that Russia does not comply with international agreements and treaties, in particular the Budapest Memorandum, and does not respect the independence and sovereignty of Ukraine’s internationally recognized borders.
The resolution also calls on Russia to resume negotiations for the release of all illegally detained Ukrainian citizens and their return home. The UN General Assembly recalled that Russia cannot force Crimean residents to serve in its army and condemned the recruitment drives in the occupied peninsula.
Furthermore, in the resolution adopted by the UN General Assembly:
- calls on Russia to immediately withdraw its troops from Crimea and immediately end the occupation of Ukrainian territory;
- condemns the increasing militarization in the Black and Azov Seas, including the Kerch Strait;
- stresses that the presence of Russian troops in Crimea is contrary to Ukraine’s national sovereignty and undermines the security and stability of neighboring countries and Europe;
- condemns the use by the Russian Federation of the companies of the Ukrainian military industry captured by it in occupied Crimea, as well as the construction and opening of a bridge over the Kerch Strait and a railway bridge;
- calls on the Russian Federation to return unconditionally and without delay all property and weapons seized from the ships “Berdyansk” and “Nikopol” and the tugboat “Yana Kapu”;
- Condemns the trips of Russian officials to the temporarily occupied Crimea;
- calls on all United Nations member states, as well as international organizations and specialized agencies, to refrain from making trips to Crimea that are not coordinated with Ukraine;
- calls on all UN member states and relevant international organizations cooperating with the UN to refrain from any action or interaction with the Russian Federation in Crimea.
Recall that the UN General Assembly adopted a resolution on Crimea yesterday, December 7. Ukraine’s proposed document was supported by more than 60 countries, while Russia opposed the resolution.
