The worst humanitarian crisis in 75 years could occur in 2021. The reason is the increase in the number of people who are on the brink of starvation. This was stated by the executive director of the UN World Food Program, David Beasley, in a special session of the UN General Assembly dedicated to the fight against the coronavirus.

According to him, due to the pandemic, the number of people who can die of hunger has increased from 135 to 270 million.

“Depending on the situation at the moment, 2021 could be catastrophic. 2021 threatens to be the year of the most serious humanitarian crisis since the founding of the UN,” Beasley said.

In that sense, he called on world leaders and international organizations to pay attention to financing the fight against hunger and the causes that cause migration.

We will recall that former UN Secretary General António Guterres said that by the end of 2020, 130 million people are at risk of starvation.
